BLACK MEN TEACH, EMPOWERING THE GROWTH OF BLACK MALE TEACHERS.
Black Men Teach, a non-profit based in Saint Paul, Minnesota (serving the Twin Cities metro area), offers a constellation of programs, partnerships, and supports designed to recruit, prepare, place, and retain Black male teachers in elementary schools.
In 2018, a pair of influential friends from Minnesota set out to address the deep opportunity gaps in educational outcomes between white children and children of color in their state. As they did their due diligence, one thing stood out to them—the schools were full of children of all races, income levels, genders, ethnicities, and experiences, but almost all of the teachers were white women, many of them affluent.
As it stands, only 0.5% of teachers in all of Minnesota are Black men. This lack of representation not only perpetuates some of the widest opportunity gaps in the nation but also denies all students the rich social experiences necessary for success in today’sglobalized world.
Originally, Black Men Teach aimed to place enough Black male teachers to make up 20% of the teaching staff in eight BMT partner schools. We’re now orchestrating a coalition of organizations working to expand this vision to every public elementary school in Minnesota where 40% or more of the students identify as Black.
Since our incorporation in 2018, Black Men Teach has achieved major successes. This report is an opportunity for us not only to build on that success but also to tell the stories of Black Men Teach in our own words.
