Our Impact.
ALEX McCOY.
Former Teacher, BMT Instructional Coach.
A career in education was the last thing Alex wanted.
His mother, grandparents, an aunt, a cousin, and more
were all educators. In fact, he had only ended up in
Minneapolis because his mother moved the family
here from Philadelphia to accept professorships at
Macalester College and the University of Minnesota.
However, despite Alex’s efforts to avoid the family
business, he says that once he got to college, he felt
Called. He spent nine years as a classroom teacher,
moved on to co-develop an effective phonics teaching
tool, and has now been an instructional coach
for over a decade.
“We know that the burnout rate for Black teachers is around
three years. A lot of that can be changed with the kind of
support Black Men Teach offers. The community we provide...
is needed as well. A couple of fellows have said to me that
their trajectory was already different, but that finding Black
Men Teach has helped them navigate that pathway
to being teachers.”
