PROGRAMS AND INITIVATIVES
The following programs and initiatives are the cornerstone of BMT’s work. Through these programs, we meet our Fellows wherever they are in life, build a brotherhood around them, and help them unlock their power as change agents in our schools and communities.
BMT academy
Opening doors of educational opportunity for all youth.
Recruitment begins with high school juniors and seniors who sign up for an elective class within the Education Pathways program. In this specialized Education 101 class, students earn college credits and learn about pedagogy, cultural studies, education career options, and more. During the second semester, Black male students can then opt into BMT Academy, a hands-on teaching experience designed to give them space to design lesson plans, build activities to grow classroom culture and explore their unique approaches to instruction.
Through several Saturday training sessions with BMT program leaders and elder Fellows, participants build camaraderie, confidence, and instructional and classroom management skills to create their own elementary-level social-emotional learning (SEL) lesson plans. It all culminates in the spring, where high schoolers essentially run their own school of 2nd to 6th graders under the guidance of experienced Black male teachers.
bmt high school fellows
Supporting Black male high school students in education through brotherhood, mentorship, and career exploration.
Black male high school juniors and seniors interested in education can apply to become BMT High School Fellows. High School Fellows receive ongoing support with high school completion, the college application process, finding funding for college, and securing relevant work experience. Through brotherhood, career exploration, and mentorship, High School Fellows strengthen their college readiness and make smoother transitions.
Black male high school juniors and seniors who are interested in teaching careers and attend one of our high school partnership sites are encouraged to apply :
