BMT & HABITAT FOR HUMANITY HOMEOWNERSHIP INITIATIVE
Partnering with Habitat for Humanity to provide financial aid and homeownership support.
One major barrier to retaining effective Black male teachers is the widespread inequality that blocks paths to homeownership. With this partnership, our established Teaching Fellows can access first-time homebuyer programs and personalized support from financial coaches at no cost to them, helping them become knowledgeable, prepared, and qualified buyers. With this initiative we are committed to rewarding each of our qualified Fellows $30,000 toward down payments on the homes they choose. Our first cohort of BMT Homeowners is on track to move by winter 2024.
BMT and University of Minnesota’s HBCU Initiative
Partnering with HBCUs to recruit Black male graduates for master’s degrees in education, with financial aid and support.
The more than 100 Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs) across the country routinely outpace non-HBCUs in preparing and graduating Black and brown professionals in all career sectors. This is especially true for Black teachers and educational leaders. Under this initiative, BMT program leaders are seeking partnerships with HBCUs to identify and recruit Black male HBCU graduates to pursue a master’s degree in education. Students will pursue their master’s degrees at the University of Minnesota while receiving support from the BMT College Fellowship program. Tuition ($40,000) is fully funded by the University of Minnesota, and prospective students also receive a living stipend of up to $20,000, provided by BMT.
