BMT College Fellows.
Preparing Black men for teaching through mentorship, scholarships, and experience.
The BMT College Fellowship Program is a multi-year commitment for men aspiring to become elementary school teachers. College Fellows receive broad, long-term support in completing their teacher preparation requirements. They receive ongoing mentorship facilitated by Leadership Coaches (current or former teachers and administrators) who support them in meeting academic and health and wellness goals. BMT also provides paid classroom internship opportunities, up to $20,000 in scholarship support, a stipend during student teaching, guidance in completing the edTPA, as well as support during the final licensure process.
BMT supports both traditional Fellows continuing from high school, as well as a range of non-traditional Fellows who are switching careers or are otherwise entering higher education later in life and with higher stakes. To that end, BMT is currently working on an alternative process for experienced paraprofessionals to earn teaching certifications by eliminating the burden of full time work while attending college, which often slows the pace of earning a degree. Black male college students of all ages who are enrolled at accredited schools full time to pursue education careers are encouraged to apply to become Black Men Teach College Fellows; previous involvement with us is not required.
BMT Teaching Fellows:
Fellows launch their teaching careers in partner schools, with ongoing support, leadership roles, and loan forgiveness opportunities.
Once Fellows graduate and complete their teacher training hours, they can begin their careers in our partner schools. Fellows receive ongoing professional development—both 1:1 with our experienced Black male instructional coach and through peer mentorship during meetings and retreats with their Fellow cohort. Teaching Fellows also gain leadership experience by providing occasional guidance to our High School and College Fellows. Tenured Fellows also become eligible for our Student Loan Forgiveness Program, which partners with Minneapolis-based corporations to provide tuition reimbursement grants.
